As a result of the loss of public funding for more formal tuition, by popular request, a group was set up by Filby’s Playing Field Committee in 2011 to assist those who wanted help in getting acquainted with computers.
It provided space, the Village Club Room, and purchased phone and broadband facilities to enable an internet connection.
Run by computer literate volunteers, it now helps its members by delivering one-on-one tuition on any topic they care to ask about.
The group meets once a week, for 2 hours at 10 am on a Tuesday morning, throughout the year, and those attending pay a fee of just £3.00 per session which goes to the Village Hall Fund.
The fee also buys tea and biscuits.
A Case Study - Mrs. Rita Greehan
Rita is Danish and is a widow living alone in the nearby village of Ormesby.
Rita was a founder group member who had been drawn to the group as a result of local advertising.
Knowing absolutely nothing about computers, she wished to learn how to email relatives in both Scotland and in Denmark.
Rita was helped in selecting a laptop and in installing broadband services at her cottage.
She quickly learnt how to email and to Skype. She, now, ‘surfs the web’ confidently and has since learnt how to convert video tape to digital recordings.
Her current project is to establish a web page for her branch of the W.I..
Rita said that ‘I have no relatives living nearby and, until I learnt how to use my laptop, I relied upon letters to stay in touch with them. Now we can communicate at will and I often have chats with them via Skype. For me, this really has been a life changing experience!’
