Events kicked off, the previous day, when children were invited to take part in a Pumpkin Carve with the Pumpkins being used for decorations at a party the following day. In our packed Club Room, it really was a fun event, enjoyed by all who took part
The Official Opening Celebrations commenced, at 3:00 pm with a Halloween Party for the kids and what a hoot that was. The hall was packed to the rafters with kids and their parents, all in costume. Organised by Georgina Barron and family, the children had a whale of a time, as did all the adults who looked on. Well done, Georgina and all who helped the event a great success.
The Official Opening Ceremony commenced at 5:15 pm with an introduction by David Thompson M.B.E., Chairman of Filby Playing Field Committee.
Adrian Thompson, Vice Chairman of the Committee announced the unveiling of a clock, donated by the Craft Club, in memory of Barbara Secker, who was instrumental in fund raising for the new village hall. A plaque to Barbara was then unveiled by her daughter, Jenny Thompson, and Pat Bell of the Craft Club.
Committee members, Steve Elderkin and John Baldry, were invited to unveil a picture recording the names of the 380 people who had made donations to the hall's Buy-a-Brick campaign, which had raised a total of £12,182 towards the costs of the new hall.
Adrian introduced Derek Nicker, who had organised our BIG Lottery Grant Applications. He outlined the history of the project and reported the hall had cost a total of £640,000. A further £8,000 had been spent on furniture and equipment and another £22,000 would be spent finishing equipping the hall.
Bouquets were presented to Derek's wife, Caroline and Anne Chapman, wife of our Grant Coordinator, Peter, for their support, during the long application and build processes. Another bouquet was presented to Joy Baldry for her sterling work undertaken throughout the project.
Official events were concluded when Adrian, David and Derek unveiled a plaque, in reception, to commemorate the occasion.
The party then started and guests were entertained by local bands Maddison County and Sugar and Spice, who had offered their services, free-of-change, for the occasion.
Thank to everybody who contributed by way food preparation, washing up, clearing away and all those things that were needed to be done to make this a brilliant day.
